As of January 2025, MDLT’s Joshua Tree office will be closed every Friday.
Yucca Weevil Watch
Join our Yucca Weevil Watch 2023! This is a Community Science project using the iNaturalist app. Join our community effort to document the presence of yucca weevils (Scyphophorus yuccae) in Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia). We will be making observations of trees with evidence of yucca weevil damage.
A virtual training for the project will take place on Monday June 12 from 4-5pm. We will train interested observers on how to spot yucca weevil damage as well as to how to participate in the project itself. Preregistration is required. RSVP here.
Butterflies and Skippers of Joshua Tree National Park
Save the date! Join Dennis Walker, co-author of The Butterflies and Skippers of Joshua Tree National Park, at MDLT headquarters to learn about local butterflies.
This lecture series is in honor of Audrey W. Rottman.
Philanthropy Mailing Montage
Our Philanthropy team needs help with mailings for Earth Week! Earth Week is a great time for MDLT to connect with our supporters to help protect the desert. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, email mackenzie@mdlt.org 48 hours in advance.
Volunteer appreciation event
Join us for a celebration of volunteer community accomplishments. We will have food, games, gifts, and desert trivia. RSVP by emailing mackenzie@mdlt.org.
April Monthly Monitoring
Are you interested in assisting our Natural Resources staff in monitoring our local lands? Our Community Lands Ranger program has evolved into Monthly Monitoring Days. This is a new program designed to monitor MDLT’s Morongo Basin Preserves for any changes to the land. On every second Wednesday of the month, we will be recruiting volunteers from this specific corps of volunteers to hike long distances cross-country with dramatic elevation change and uneven terrain. Some properties will also require volunteers to scramble over rocks. This volunteer opportunity is highly strenuous and requires a high level of fitness and comfortability in remote areas. These volunteers will be accompanied by MDLT’s Natural Resources staff. RSVP for this training by emailing Mackenzie at mackenzie@mdlt.org.
April Stewardship Day
Stewardship Volunteer Day is a monthly opportunity to help MDLT Natural Resource technicians do habitat restoration through vertical mulching, sign and fence installation, property clean-up and trash removal, local monitoring and data collection, and invasive plant removal. Stewardship Day locations vary depending on where the technicians need the most support. Volunteering for Stewardship Volunteer Days can be strenuous work, that requires the ability to lift objects, and work in the sun for periods of time. These opportunities are a fulfilling way to directly support the deserts where we live, work, and recreate. RSVP by emailing Mackenzie at mackenzie@mdlt.org.
