Mojave Desert Land Trust applies for off-highway vehicle restoration grant

Helendale, California – February 9, 2021

Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT) is applying for grant funding from the State of California, Department of Parks and Recreation, Off-highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division, for the 2021 grant cycle. The grant monies will be used to restore areas damaged by off-highway vehicle use at Palisades Ranch (near Helendale, California), an area set aside for its rare and outstanding resource values including large desert riparian woodland areas and desert tortoise habitat. Damaged areas will be restored using a variety of techniques including de-compacting soils, mulching, and seeding of native plants.  Fencing and/or barricades will be installed to prevent future damage, and signage and educational materials will be developed to help OHV users ride responsibly in sensitive resource areas and to provide information about legal riding opportunities.

MDLT welcomes the public’s input regarding this Restoration Grant. The preliminary grant proposal will be made available online for review and public comment from March 2, 2021 to May 3, 2021 on the California Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation website at http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/
