She has been posting from that area for two weeks, garnering 450,000 to 1.3 million likes, the newspaper said. Combined the two photos she put up were liked 800,000 times, with 4,300 comments – most of them critical – especially from advocacy groups concerned about the example she’d be setting.

“We ask that Miley Cyrus consider her status as a public figure and remove this photo from her social media accounts in order to educate others and to prevent potential damage to Joshua trees,” wrote Mojave Desert Land Trust Executive Director Geary Hund in a statement quoted by the Palm Springs Desert Sun.
